A Runner May Not Live A Day Longer, But Will Live A Longer Day!

 

I Live a Longer Day!

 

When my brother was in his running prime, he would say, “A runner may not live a day longer, but will live a longer day.”  This saying resonated with me ever since.  There are many reasons why I believe this saying is true, specifically due to running’s positive effects on your health, both physically and mentally.

In my late teens and early 20s, I smoked and ate junk food, meat and potatoes, and beer, were the main staple of my diet.  I’d light up the second I woke up, and sometimes even light up during a meal.  Yuck!  I didn’t focus on my health; it didn’t matter, I was invincible.  Fact is, if you buy a new car and beat it to death, it will run great for a while, however, at some point the abuse catches up and it falls apart.  If I would have continued down the path I was on, chances are I would be in extremely poor physical and mental health today, and therefore leading a miserable life.  Fortunately, I chose the path of a healthy life, and my life has been truly fulfilling.  The bottom line; if you don’t have your health, you have nothing.  Health is more important than all the money in the world.  I am glad I found running and chose the healthy path!

Think about it; how many times have you woke up early and headed out for a run before the rest of the world has even started their day — enjoying the crisp morning air and the peace of dawn?  Did you think, wow, I already ran my miles and I have the entire day to do everything I need to do; I feel like a million bucks?   It tees you up for a wonderful, productive day!  That certainly qualifies under the category of living a longer day!

To this day, I have the energy to live an active, productive life style all due to running.  I have never stayed in a hospital nor had any problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes or a serious disease.  I have as much energy today as I did when I was in my early 20s, though not the same interests.  My days are full and my attitude is great.  I’ve got a wonderful wife and running friends that keep me motivated and challenged.  Seriously, if my life was to end tomorrow, I definitely have lived an abundance of longer days and I am grateful for that in so many ways!

Keep running or doing what you are doing to maintain your health so you, too, can live a longer day!

    I know what you mean about a longer day. I get up about 4:30 & hit the pavement for a few miles or, for a bit of variety, strap on the headtorch & head for the forest trails. I run with my dog so I prefer the solitude of ohmygods o’clock as he tends to keep a better pace (except for the odd lamp-post). Because I get up so early on weekdays @ the weekend I can have a couple hours of lie in & still be up the woods before 7 &, therefore, before everyone else. I tried running after work but family/household duties got in the way & I didn’t have the same energy throughout the day.
    I’m definitely in better shape now (very nearly 37) than I have been since my mid-teens so I hope to be living the longer day for a long time to come.

      Hey Simon…That is awesome. Years ago I ran more in the evening and was fine. Today, I don’t have the same energy in the evening as I do in the morning. It just feels better. I also like your running partner, he probably listens to every word you say while keeping the pace. Thanks for your input and keep running! -J

    This is totally true! I wake up an hour early each day to run or cross train. Since I am so used to getting up early, I rarely sleep in. I am getting to an age where you can start to see the differences in the health of myself compared to those who have not taken care of themselves.
